Still Life

When creating still-life compositions it is best to start simply, working from just one or two objects. Focus on capturing the form and shading (light and dark) of those objects and the shadows they leave on the surface on which they are resting.

Working from just one or two objects means that you can draw the objects larger than life size, which is good for giving yourself space to pay attention to the lights and darks of an object, its exact shape and how the light falls around it.

Later, when you feel more confident, you can put together a group of objects that are a similar colour, and focus on finding ways to highlight the subtle differences in colour, shading and form.

You can experiment with traditional objects, such as flowers and fruit, or more contemporary objects, or you can mix the two. It can be fun to group objects together in interesting ways, for example different types of object that perform the same function but come from different eras, such as a candlestick, a gas lamp and a light bulb. Think about depicting contemporary objects that you use in daily life but have never seen represented in still life before.
